Lantern Floating Hawaii

Every Memorial Day, Oahu’s residents and visitors alike begin to gather at Ala Moana Beach Park/Magic Island early in the morning. They spend the whole day in the sun barbecuing, swimming, and inscribing their memories on paper lanterns provided by Lantern Floating Hawaii.

From the website:

Lantern Floating Hawaii is a ceremony where all can come together for a personal and collective moment of remembrance, reflection, and offering gratitude to those who have gone before us. It is a chance to be surrounded by the love, understanding, and support of others – even strangers. We are strengthened as a community as we reach out to support others and build understanding of our common values and experiences.

I’ve attended the ceremony in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2014. Each year, it grows bigger and bigger, with the crowds growing to be more than 40,000 people.  While I’m skipping this year (2015), I always recommend that anyone who hasn’t gone should go at least once in their life to experience it.

Here’s a few of my favorite images from past years, but you can see my entire collection on my portfolio site.
