The majestic Napali Coast
On the second day of our Kauai Visitor’s Bureau sponsored trip, we were treated to one of my absolute favorite things to do on Kauai – a Nā Pali coast boat tour! This year, we went with Kauai Sea Tours, who we really enjoyed sailing with. The half-day Nā Pali morning snorkel tour was great for seeing several pods of dolphins throughout the morning (as they sleep in the afternoon), though as a landscape photographer, the midday light is really rough to shoot in, so I’m hoping we can do an afternoon/evening tour next time we’re there!

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa is a truly impressive property!
“Where do people in Hawaii go for vacation?”
Well, I can assure you that Kauai is probably my #1 recommendation. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the islands, and have favorite things about each and every one. I’m a Maui girl myself, and my favorite place in the entire world is Haleakala National Park, but there is something about Kauai that brings me and others from all over the world back to the Garden Isle for the chance to ‘get away’.
Now, what we got back from wasn’t truly a vacation – it was a press trip fully sponsored by our friends, the Kauai Visitor’s Bureau, so I will be detailing the accommodations and activities we were treated to over the six days we were there. The theme of the trip was ‘romance’, and thus Ed and I treated it as a sort of “working-honeymoon-that’s-not-really-a-honeymoon-because-he-still-owes-me-a-real-one” – though Kauai would definitely be on the list of possibilities for when that finally happens!
That being said, let’s get to the trip recap: Our latest Kauai adventure began with a midday flight, which we rushed to after making a quick stop in Waikiki to hit up 2Chillies Swimwear shop in Waikiki for a cover-up shirt and tank top. The flight to Kauai on Hawaiian Airlines was quick and easy as usual, and we were met at the Lihue airport by Dara, who then drove us to our first hotel, the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa. Now, as a child of Hawaii who was fortunate to have had a dad who would travel inter-island for work and bring his family with him, I’ve been to numerous Hawaii resorts in my time, but the husband and I agreed that the Grand Hyatt Kauai was an exceptionally lovely resort.

Made another attempt at the meteor shower last night, only to find the skies covered with thick, persistent clouds. While this prevented me from taking another crack at the stars, I did get some interesting photographs of Lanikai Beach in the darkness. The tide was receding, and the waves were gently lapping at the shore, creating a beautiful gradient during my 30-second exposures. Combined with the clouds, it felt almost like we were in a contained stage setting, or a surreal dream, as if there was a ceiling over this space that stretched out into the darkness. Then, the waning crescent moon finally peaked through the clouds on the horizon, lending a new depth to the scene. I managed to briefly capture Venus chasing the moon, but Jupiter, which had risen earlier, was lost to the clouds.
Might try again tonight to see what I can get, if it’s clearer!
